Painting Behind You

oil painting

Kai Yi Kwok, Painting behind you, 2023, oil on canvas, 133×133 cm.

‘Painting Behind You ’depicts the phenomenon of people checking in and taking photos with art pieces in exhibitions without too much concern about the ideas that artworks expressed. In this painting, part of the canvas has been left blank, presenting the shape of a human figure, which looks like a woman who carries a bag and poses in a common check-in posture. The background consists of irregular red and orange blocks scattered on a dark green background, which is seemingly decorative. However, the background is a simplified image of firefighters resting on the grass after disaster relief, which seems irrelevant to the theme about checking in the exhibition and the character who poses in the middle. The lack of correlation between the image and the theme highlights the absurdity of the behavior of blindly checking in and taking photos with artworks.
